Celebration- A point of discussion

This post has been published by me as a part of the Blog-a-Ton 33; the thirty-third edition of the online marathon of Bloggers; where we decide and we write. To be part of the next edition, visit and start following Blog-a-Ton. The theme for the month is 'Celebrations'

“Everybody tells us to celebrate little-little moments in our life, but can we?”

“Give me one reason why can’t we” was the reply followed by a sarcastic smile.

“What according to you are those little moments that qualify for celebrations: promotion news, high score in exams, attraction of a girl, transition from attraction to love, buying a house, unleashing a splendid shopping spree, birth anniversary of someone-when we all know, by and large, that the same someone is inching close to the penultimate stage of his life-cycle, wedding anniversary- where the two genders celebrate of having lived through one more year of relentless compromising and palpable explanations to each other for umpteen misunderstandings they had so far and will, indubitable have further and so on?”

“You seem to be too pessimistic, don’t you?” the sarcastic smile that followed was found to be disturbing by the Arun who desperately wanted to seek answers.

Not allowing to interrupt Arun, the gentleman continued to speak.

“Dear Arun, I know you have seen bad times in your life and good times too; celebration can be done for both. You celebrate good times by welcoming a smile on your face, by feeling the emotional side of happiness and by sharing it with others. Whereas you celebrate bad times too; by getting depressed on how things turned hostile for you. Sometimes celebrations for bad times may involve being patient, optimistic that you will have the chance to celebrate good moments soon, trying out new way or redefining your approach to deal with the celebration of crisis.”

“Ahh, that’s an optimistic explanation Sir; but not convincing. Don’t forget that someone’s loss is someone’s gain. If today you have a good time it may be well possible that you are giving a bad time to others. Why you celebrate good times? To cloak the fact that we will soon be facing tough times ahead and we don’t know if we can make it to the next stop- which happens to be good time, or, to run into delusion of being at peace, or, to flaunt the fact that we are apostles of “live-by-the-day” fellas.”

“Man is full of emotions. What you are speaking is also driven by emotion- emotion of being indifferent towards loving your life. One celebrates not to run away from reality but to be more prepared for the tough times ahead; to celebrate the tough times with appropriate grit and wit. What you think of as an innuendo to incompetence or delusion is in reality called as hiatus. Man needs a change; change is inevitable part of human life and he has to take his share of change or else it would leave him in despair. Change can be brought in by a number of ways and one of them is celebrations. Understand this and you’ll love your life.”

Having said this, the gentleman left. Arun had an unknown feeling of pinch in his stomach of having lost the conversation, which was otherwise very rare. A student can never teach his teacher Arun thought to himself as he saw the old man disappearing into the lane covered by lush green all around its border. Arun admired his techer a lot and after this conversation he confirmed to himself that a teacher’s wit never fades albeit his age does.
