Complicated Relations? – Part 1

“The girl looks decent”, were the first words from Vasant’s mother, who was busy in observing the tea-serving style of the girl, instead her face. She poked Vasant with her elbow, sitting next to her on the sofa and whispered, “So what do you think? For me she’s, as of now, very pretty. It’s a YES from me”. Grinning at her furtively, Vasant winked his eyes forcibly and asked to keep quiet.

He turned to his right side and was surprised to see his father gesturing him in the same manner as his mother. He cooed,” please!! I need time to think”. Exactly opposite, were the girl’s parents and younger sister, agog and anxious for his answer.

Vasant felt the heat of the situation; even after the entry of the girl in the scene he was yet to see her, yet to form an opinion. No matter how anxious he was, he couldn’t look as he felt he was hounded by others. Gathering his vacillating courage, he managed to look at her and was stunned in and for a jiffy.

Man!! She’s damn gorgeous!! That may be an understatement, she is contagious. He thought. She wore a pink colour sari and a matching blouse, her hair left open; which made her look simple but beautiful. Vasant reprimanded himself for looking at her so late.

At the same time, he was lucky to have the girl looking at him too. Lucky me, said Vasant to himself. They stared each other for about a minute or so and it was followed by an unexpected, mutual smile; unaware of the reason, both kept smiling.

Now this acted like a piece of meat for those hungry animals, which were waiting to pick up a cue and decide the future of this relation. All the family members clapped in exaltation and unfortunately, it interrupted Vasant’s staring-and-smiling ceremony. He turned around only to be surprised by the mini hugs given by his mother to her mother, by his father to her father, and most annoying: her sister hugged their dog! He turned to the girl holding the tray, looked at her; she gave a smile, wider than the previous one.

After few minutes, all were settled down and courageously, Vasant spoke with audacity, for the first time this evening, “I need to speak to her before I, and you all can make a decision”. There was a stunning silence in the room. Everyone’s face turned blue, as if he said something very serious. Her mother’s face had become too pale to sustain the smile.

“Gone is the time when we used to talk to our wives, for the first time, after marriage. We should move on. If they want to talk and fix things up, let’s allow them” was the line from Vasant’s father, which grasped the agreement from others.

“Take him to the terrace dear” asked the girl’s father and both of them stood up and Vasant followed her to the terrace. They didn’t speak until they reached there. On reaching, he was mesmerized with the beauty of the nature. He stood on the sea-facing side and watched the hypnotizing sunset. He unfolded his arms and spread them wide open to soak the freshness of the cool breeze.

“Stop acting Vasant. What was the need to smile down there?  Before coming here, didn’t you see my photo?” with a serious tone she spoke. Vasant turned around, amazed and said, “I seriously didn’t have any idea that it might be you, Shruti. If I had, I wouldn’t have come here. C’mon, even you smiled at me. Can you justify that? If yes, I would tell then you why I smiled.”

“Do you seriously wish to marry me?”

“I haven’t really thought about it” replied Vasant.

“Then why are you here. We aren’t strangers to each other Vasant. You know me from a long time. Long time before your best friend and I were in a relation, long before you were in relation with my best friend.” said Shruti with a raised voice. Her eyes had become moist. The reminiscence gripped her mind.

“Look Shruti, this was really uncalled for me. The past that daunts you now, does the same to me every day. I assumed you knew that I and Priya broke up, but I am surprised why you broke up with Darshit! Or are you forced by your family to marry someone else? In that case, I would seriously doubt you being the same old Shruti, who couldn’t be controlled by any one. Where’s the out-spoken girl, whom I knew, would stand up for the guy she loved, come what may, who turned the world upside down if one dared to speak against the love of her life? “

“Do me a favour, will you?” asked Shruti benignly, “Sure if it lies in my jurisdiction”, was the reply.

“Go down and tell them you are ready to marry me. I will follow the same. Pick me up tomorrow at sharp 5 pm when you leave your office and we shall go for a long drive.”

Confounded by this Vasant said in disagreement, “what are you talking? No, I am not going to do that, for neither of us has ever thought about us getting together. Don’t you think it’s too early and….”

“Just do as I say Vasant. Ask your queries to be patient and we shall, together find the otherwise elusive answers”, cutting him in the middle, Shruti said sternly and both left the terrace.

Radha came running inside the room. Managing the nauwari sari was still a difficult job for her. She was wearing it since 8 years as it was the traditional Brahmin apparel for women in those days. She went to the wooden cupboard beside the bed and took out the white pagadi and gave it Ramrao. Ramrao took it with a smile on his face and looking into her eyes he said,” Thank you my dear wife” for which she smiled him back and put her head down evincing her shyness. Having said that he left for work. Radha was 18 years old and Ramrao, who was 35, then, was her husband. In those days girls were married at the age of 8 or...

A small crowd of reporters was waiting anxiously for the WRITER to arrive, and back of my mind I was very much excited to keep them waiting. I was accompanied by my agent and we walked inside the conference hall and the sound of warm applause relieved me; though, it didn’t satisfy me. We sat on the chair, which was a de facto way to start the so called interview. “Good evening to all my friends. I am now fixed to chair and you can start the interview. I know many of you have myriad questions running in your minds and soon they are going to be blasted on me. The theme for the month is 'An Untold Story' "You miss her ??" asked the son to his father who was on the verge of entering into senility. “I have never. Nor do I intend to.” was the sturdy reply. Son sensed the succinct rudeness in his father’s reply. Trying to be indifferent he proceeded further. “Well… true. You only miss someone when that someone is absent; mother is present in your heart and you can’t deny it.” “See, you got me” said his father with a smile on his wrinkled face. “Dad, I wish she was with us today. I could have seen tears in her eyes when I was about to go abroad for my job. I could have asked her to prepare all delicious desi dishes to eat.” There were tears in his eyes while saying this...
